At the beginning of the 21st century, Iraq had restored or established diplomatic relations with nearly 80 countries and resumed activities within regional and international organizations such as the Arab League, United Nations agencies, and the International Monetary Fund.
Iraq has the fifth largest proven oil reserves in the world. Oil exports are the absolute pillar of a country's fiscal revenue. In addition to abundant oil and gas resources, it also has fertile farmland, water resources, and a young population structure. After decades of war and international sanctions, infrastructure has suffered severe damage.
