Georgia is located in the central-western part of the South Caucasus, bordering Russia to the north, Azerbaijan to the southeast, Armenia to the south, Turkey to the southwest, and the Black Sea to the west. Covering an area of 69,700 square kilometers with a coastline of 309 kilometers, Georgia holds a crucial geographical position, serving as the gateway between the Caucasus and Central Asia to Europe. Currently, 80% of port cargo and 60% of railway transportation in Georgia are transit goods. In the western Black Sea, Georgia has two deep-water ports, Batumi and Poti. Additionally, a railway connecting Baku-Tbilisi-Kars is under construction, linking Azerbaijan and Turkey and connecting the Caucasus railway network to the European railway network. In terms of ports, Georgia has two major seaports, Batumi and Poti, with Kulevi and Supsa serving as pipeline oil terminal ports.
According to the statistics from the Georgian National Statistics Office, Georgia's GDP in 2020 was $19.509 billion, ranking 112th in the world, with a per capita GDP of $5,282, ranking 101st. In the first two months of 2023, Georgia's foreign trade volume reached $2.89 billion, showing a year-on-year growth of 12.3%. Russia ($467 million), Turkey ($387 million), and China ($246 million) are Georgia's top three trading partners. Georgia's exports amounted to $910 million, a year-on-year increase of 20.3%. The top three export destinations were Armenia ($130 million), Russia ($130 million), and China ($110 million). Georgia's imports reached $1.98 billion, with a year-on-year increase of 20.3%. The top three import sources were Russia ($340 million), Turkey ($320 million), and China ($130 million). In recent years, abundant oil and natural gas resources have also been discovered in western, eastern, and Black Sea regions of Georgia.
Since September 1, 2014, the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) agreement between Georgia and the European Union has been in effect. Products produced in Georgia can enter the EU market without tariffs. Furthermore, the China-Georgia Free Trade Agreement, effective from January 1, 2018, eliminates tariffs on 96.5% of Georgian products immediately, covering 99.6% of Georgia's total imports from China. The remaining products will gradually reduce to zero tariffs over the next five years. This implies that Chinese products can enter the EU market through Georgia duty-free. With the implementation of these agreements, China and Georgia are expected to enhance practical cooperation and further promote the Belt and Road Initiative, achieving mutual prosperity.
