The World Trade Expo Georgia has been successfully held for six editions. At the last exhibition, over 150 Chinese enterprises participated, covering industries such as building materials, complete vehicles and accessories, consumer electronics, hardware tools, textiles, security products, toys, daily consumer goods, and new energy photovoltaic equipment. The on-site transaction volume was 8.25 million US dollars, and the intended transaction volume was 31.9 million USD. All the participating enterprises expressed great optimism about Georgia and its huge re-export market.
Georgia, with a land area of 69,700 square kilometers, is situated in the central-western part of the South Caucasus. Bordered by Russia to the north, Azerbaijan to the southeast, Armenia to the south, Turkey to the southwest, and the Black Sea to the west, it occupies a Geo-strategic position controlling the gateway from the Caucasus and Central Asia to Europe. As a historic nexus on the Ancient Silk Road and modern Eurasian Corridor, Georgia stands as a pivotal re-export hub and key partner in the Belt and Road Initiative. Notably, 80% of port cargo and 60% of railway freight constitute re-exported goods. The country boasts two deep-water Black Sea ports (Poti and Batumi) and two oil pipeline terminals (Kulevi and Supsa), granting significant logistical advantages.
Renowned as "God's Private Garden" for its temperate four-season climate, Georgia attracts global tourism and holds historical significance as the birthplace of Soviet leader Stalin. In 2023, its GDP reached 30.7 billion USD, increasing 6.7% year-on-year. Its foreign trade volume was 21.53 billion USD, growing by 12.5% year-on-year. Recent discoveries of oil and gas reserves in western Georgia, eastern regions, and the Black Sea shelf have injected new economic momentum. China remains Georgia's top import source and third-largest trading partner.
On June 14, 2000, Georgia it officially became a member of the WT, enjoying the preferential tariffs of mutual most-favored-nation treatment with other WTO member states. The China-Georgia Free Trade Agreement (May 2017), China’s first FTA with a Eurasian nation and post Belt and Road Initiative milestone, grants 96.5% duty-free access to Georgian markets (covering 99.6% of Chinese imports). Achieving EU candidate status in 2023, Georgia now enjoys tariff-free access to the EU’s 2.4 billion-consumer market. Enterprises in Georgian Special Economic Zones benefit from full tax exemption. By now, Georgia has a duty-free or extremely low-tax market covering a population of 2.4 billion, providing a significant advantage for its trade and creating great possibilities for it to be developed into an important logistics, transportation and communication center among Eurasian countries. Establishing a company in the special economic zone of Georgia is exempt from all taxes except personal income tax. After deep processing of Chinese products in the special economic zone, a certificate of origin from Georgia can be obtained, and they can be exported to Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States, Turkey and other countries without tariffs. Under the current situation of "de-Sinicization" in Europe and the United States, Chinese enterprises can not only avoid the high tariffs of Europe and the United States by re-exporting to Georgia, but also facilitate better circulation of goods in the European Union. Therefore, Georgia will become an important re-export trade partner of China.
